I'm On The Verge of Giving Birth ...

... to the funniest, most fabulous baby in the world!

I may be a little biased but I can't help being so excited (and more than a little terrified) about opening my new one-man show, Type/Caste, this weekend.

About nine months ago I had the chance to apply for a spot in this year's National Queer Arts Festival and my partner, Shane, suggested I propose a one-man play based on Acting While Black - a series I wrote last year for Theatre Bay Area where I interviewed black Bay Area actors about their experiences in the profession. I asked the stupendously talented Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe to be my midwife and since then we have laughed ourselves silly, cried our hearts out, shared stories, spilled all kinds of tea, choreographed dances, marveled at the beauty and resilience of our people and at the glory of our theatrical profession, and nurtured a baby who I am so proud to share with the world. Type/Caste is my very personal exploration of the politics of diversity and (mis-) representation in the theatre. I shape-shift among several characters, do drag, perform an original punk rock song, sing and dance Broadway standards, and summon up a side of God that you may have never seen before. And that's just a little taste of all that happens in this gloriously mad romp of a solo show. It runs for only two days this weekend: Fri, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at 7.30pm African American Art & Culture Complex 762 Fulton St., San Francisco More Info and Tickets Here: http://www.rotimionline.com/type/caste Creating this play has been so life-affirming and I can't wait to share it with you! Yours in Love and Excitement, Rotimi
